 Sandblasting Wood

Sandblasting is a fantastic way of bringing your wooden doors, beams and other objects back to life whilst revealing and enhancing the natural beauty of the wood even if it has been over the years painted or varnished.

Sandblasting oak using the correct abrasive and pressure is an excellent way of cleaning Oak beams or old timber framed buildings, removing paint or unwanted coatings. There are reports that

sandblasting will damage the surface of the old oak, this is totally untrue so long as experienced operatives follow the correct procedures. Aged oak in old buildings can have a lot of woodworm infestation that although now not active has damaged the wood over the years, these soft honeycomb areas can be removed back to the hard surface before the oak sandblasting process begins. The alternative is to very gently clean the damaged surfaces maintaining the original profile if still intact. The disadvantage of open sandblasting is the airborne dust and debris thrown into the atmosphere, so it is recommended that this process is only used in an uninhabited or empty work space.

Wet blast is similar to the above but introduces a small amount of water into the abrasive reducing the airborne particles that are present with open sandblasting. With the correct sheeting and protection it is possible isolate the work area virtually eliminating contaminants. Exceptional results can be achieved without any damage to the oak or oak beams being cleaned or having paint removed.
